First attempt at back bacon

So, anyone for breakfast? Can I tempt you? I can offer you fresh laid free range eggs from my garden, and back bacon and Cumberland sausages made by me! Come the early autumn I shall also be able to offer you home-grown grilled tomatoes, and foraged wild field mushrooms. Peckish yet?  How about some homemade/home-grown Damson Compote with homemade yogurt too? Bread will be from my oven, a nice spelt loaf, which toasts brilliantly, giving you a light crisp outer over a fluffy inner; perfect in my book!

Yes, I am definitely getting into the 'Good Life' although unfortunately I bear no resemblance to the delicious Felicity Kendal.  I seem to be becoming a bit of a home-made/home-grown geek. My SIL states 'I have my standards'  when offered things I made  with love, although I don't get how she would consider ready made meals from the Marks and Spencer  chiller cabinet (her usual fodder) superior. Its almost as if some people consider real food somehow obscene!

The bacon was simplicity itself to make. I used a Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall recipe found in the Telegraph for my first attempt. His recipe recommended using pork belly, but here we prefer something with less fat, so I opted for a piece of pork loin, bought from the village butcher, removed the skin, and made my own attempt using same process  reccomended by HFW at back bacon, but omitted the salt petre.

So I guess tonight we will have to test drive this latest creation. How shall I use it? A Quiche Lorraine, using my eggs too? How about a Carbonara using pasta made with my own eggs too?  I am just loving the fabulous opportunities to eat delicious food which I know exactly where it came from, and how it was made. All I need now is a small holding, and I will have found Nirvana.

Wow, Zoe, you ARE living' the good life! You are enjoying it personally and don't need kudos--BUT the example you set for others is such a positive one so I think you deserve some kudos! Yay to you:-) I'll be over for dinner as soon as I get my plane tickets ordered!

Thanks Jan - its remarkable how rewarding it is doing these things, it costs much less, tastes far better, if easier on the planet ( next to no food miles), and well its fun!

Oh well done Zoe. We used a rrecipe from one of Hugh's books to make bacon and loved it. I recommend his Meat Book if you want to try more of this type of thing. I get as excited as you about it all! x

Mmmmmm - it's been an age since I have had the full works for breakfast. Nothing beats the taste of home grown/baked whatever and I am sure that it is better for you too. Now Zoe whether you will still be able to call your own sausages ' Cumberland' sausages after the recent legislation is another matter :)

interesting thought, Anna. I read the discussion on Twitter that raged this afternoon. What should I call them instead? They follow a traditional cumberland recipe - in fact I think the one I follow is Elizabethan in origin.

Your SIL sounds very rude! I think it's amazing that you can cure your own bacon and produce your own eggs - which I guess is an indictment of our times. It just seems so exciting and rewarding. I'm definitely coming for breakfast.

Victoria, she is very rude. This is the women that had me in tears on my wedding day. I have since developed a thicker skin.

You'd be very welcome for breakfast :-)

Your SIL sounds like...
Ummm... my mum says that if I can't think of something good to say, I shouldn't say anything, so I'll be off....
