Yep - I have a few named varieties that I am trying to increase as the bulbs are expensive. Hope to acquire a couple more at the RHS London Show mid month.
iGit says the image is too blurry - not helped by my using a macro lens on a windy old day without a tripod. I kind of like the haze though. Will attempt it again tomorrow with the right gear and conditions hopefully.
What a gorgeous blog, Zoe! This snowdrop photo reminds me of an article about an 'E.A. Bowles' - a single bulb - that sold on eBay for $567 (about 352GBP).
Yes - saw a story in the Telegraph recently of snowdrop bulbs going for crazy prices. I am reluctant to purchase them from eBay, as how can you be really sure of their provenance? You might be buying a pig in a poke?
I do have Galanthophile tendencies myself, and lust after some varieties, but I tend to confine myself to such purchases at the RHS London February Show at their Westminster Hall in London. All cards are left at home, and I restrict myself to cash only, which has a remarkable tempering affect on my spending!
Great to see you here, Pomona, and glad you approve!
I like Sam and unlike some of the other named varieties I have tried he increases well and is reliable. Yesterday I had trouble getting a crisp picture too - the camera always focused on the green bits as if the flower itself was invisible - exasperating. Then it started to rain so I gave up.
Glad to hear he is reliable - I bought 3 bulbs in the green a couple of years ago from a reputable nursery, Foxglove Plants at a London RHS show. I bought a couple of others too, 'Lady Elpinstone' who is a double yellow, but I cant find hide nor hair of her, think she might have eloped with a squirrel :-(
