In March 2011, I became the happy owner of 6 ex battery hens, through the scheme organised by the British Hen Welfare Trust, to rehome hens who are no longer considered productive enough, and would normally go for slaughter, at around 1 year old.
My hens still produce eggs, and on average I get 4 a day, which is plenty, and it allows me to sell the surpluses, which helps towards their feed costs.
I hope at some stage to get a few more, although this time I might opt for a few pure bred hens; Aracunas, Wyndottes, Dorkings and Welsummers hopefully.
