Being a bee-keeper is a long held dream for me. Alongside butterflies, bees of all descriptions are my favourite insect, and I am especially fond of the humble honey bee.
In January, 2011 I began to attend bee-keeping classes run by Basingstoke and District Bee-keeper’s Association. These consisted of weekly 2 hour long theory classes during the winter months, and then as spring and the weather permitted, practical, ‘hands-on’ sessions at the training apiaries. I would recommend the course to anyone interested in taking up bee-keeping.
I am also a member of the Fleet and District BKA and hope at some point in the future to formalise my training and do some of the British BKA assessments and exams
I own two National hives, and these will be sited in an orchard near my home in July 2011. I have purchased a nucleus colony of bees bred by a local bee keeper, and hope to place a swarm in the second one.
I’ll post from time to time about my progress, as I learn to care for my bees.
