Will I Chicken Out?

Handsome beast isn't he? He belongs to Elizabeth at Welsh Hills Again

I have longed for a small flock of chickens for a long time, I love to watch them, and I certainly love eggs. I have spent endless hours looking at coops on the internet, and working out where I should get my hens from, but to date, like the bees, I have done very little about making it a reality apart from going on a training course at a local free range farm, and learning the fundamentals of keeping happy hens.   The first time we stayed at Elizabeth's beautiful holiday cottage, Gwenoldy, I was able to watch her hens and roosters at close hand. She was very generous with her expertise, and it was during this holiday, I decided this was very much something I wanted to do myself too.

In an attempt to kick start my current slothful state, I have registered with the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) in the hope they will entrust me with some of their ex battery charges, and allow me to adopt 4 or so to live in my garden. I intend sectioning it into 3 areas, so they will have their own, in a wilder meadowy bit, under the fruit trees.

When they arrive they are pretty sorry looking, and I know all the pros and cons, especially about them being shortered lived and prone to ailments. I just felt it was the right thing to do, give a  needy hen a home.    I have looked at all the various pure breeds , bantam and hybrids, and feel to start with at least, these ginger girls will be a perfect place to start.

Now all I have to do is wait and see if they judge me suitable, and if they do, then when the next batch of farm escapees become available for me to collect and care for.

Fingers crossed!

Quick update: I am going to be getting 6 ginger girls in a few weeks, as soon as the next  batch of hens are released from the battery farm.

Such a great idea. I'd love to have some too but the most I've managed so far is a flock of Oxfam chickens for a farmer in Africa.

Thats so exciting Zoe. Your own eggs! Good luck, but I'm sure you will be judged more than suitable. I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress.
[Our neighbors had their first 2 chickens arrive over last weekend and I'm looking forward to tasting some of the promised eggs :)]

Great idea Zoe! My friends took 50 rescue chickens and they were in a really sorry state, some of them were so bald they looked like oven ready chickens walking around!!! They also had not a clue about going in at night, so every one had to be caught and put in by hand - not an easy task I can tell you!! But, they are lovely chickens, they like a cuddle now and then and seem quite affectionate. Bonus side to this, they lay a good few eggs, even when their other chickens don't. I would definitely recommend getting ex battery hens. Hope you get accepted - good luck!

How do they get rescued?

The Farmers who run the battery farm operations have been persuaded to turn them over to the BHWT when they are between a year and 2 old, as they are no longer considered good layers by then, and the farmer would then dispose of them. The fact that the BHWT takes them, means they are saved from slaughter and turning into cat food etc. They get to live out the rest of the days as a hen should, free range, outside, and able to move and forage as a hen was meant to.

Hi Zoe,

So glad to hear you're getting chickens!! They are easily some of the best pets I've ever had and I'm sure you will make a great chicken keeper. Please keep us updated on their progress and your experiences.

I'll be getting another six soon so will be posting about them shortly I'm sure :)

Enjoyed reading through your blog. I've been considering hens for a couple of months, although we're still a little unsure regarding breed and where to put them. Your blog helped and your pictures are fabulous. I'm adding you to my own humble blog (if that's okay). Great bog.

Hello Tony, thanks for calling by! Glad I could help, although I am not sure how I managed that! I spent ages looking at all the breeds, and after much thought decided rescue hens was the way to go. I shall pop by yours, and watch with interest to see what you decide to do. Regards, Zoë
